You folks just gave me some great ideas for the National History Day> This is my first year doing it and I'm eager to take any and all ideas. The innovation involved with new designs through history is right on target with the theme this year. JSadoff

Hello from another frozen Minnesotan. I love fashion design and a lot of my students ( mostly girls, sadly) said they want to be fashion designers. All of us are big fans of Project Runway on Bravo. I have DVDs on most of them. Two things: 1. After enjoying all the soap opera in the shows, I asked them to concentrate on the critiques which teach all the aesthetics, elements and principles of design. What is the most common reason for early rejected participants? Lack of skills and craft. So, I tell my kids- if you don't love the craft of sewing, stop dreaming/drawing. 2. One of the installment is great fun and learning experience for art and design- wearable art. Kids love this exercise/assignment. A colleague of mine teaches in a private school out east. She had great success with this project involving the whole community.

We recently completed our "Senior Hoodie" design competition. The winning entry will be screen printed on the front of the senior hoodies. Some of my student's have become aware of the possibilities of preprinting the fabric and then cutting and assembling the garment. This competition will provide an opportunity for them to experiment with the whole garment, rather that an 11X11 image.

So... can you share with us what became of the the shirts... I personally like the effects of spraying rit-dye onto shirts with a water bottle... The kids enjoy it too..just make sure that the bottle is on the spray setting!

The younger students aspire to have their shirt design chosen when they get older.
