There used to be something called ergonomics, probably still is, but now there is "Design Anthropolgy". What is it? Well in this instructional video, Ame Eliot of IDEO guides us through this new field of design, contrasting traditional behavior measurement techniques with those employed by IDEO to dig deeper into human motivations and interaction. She talks about how the IDEO researcher uses sustained conversations with end users and stakeholders. She also discusses many of the strategies devised by IDEO to extract richer more targeted information, such as talking to people who hold views at extreme ends of an issue rather than to a larger representative sample as in traditional market research. These more refined strategies may determine the success or failure of design solutions, particularly in areas such as sustainability where changing ingrained human behavior is the key challenge.
