Having recently participated in CHNDM’s City of Neighborhood program in New Orleans where teacher design teams tried to figure out workable solutions for the post-Katrina 9th Ward, I have been reflecting on the way design can help save lives in the event of extreme events. The recent Victorian bushfire disaster triggered a national debate in Australia on the strategies for evacuation. Until this event, official government advisories had recommended householders stay inside their houses rather than evacuate, and unfortunately due to the intensity of the fire, many lives were lost. Now some experts are calling for a return to the use of shelters that were once a common bushfire defense strategy. The challenge of designing cheap, accessible disaster shelters, or temporary housing for homeless and displaced persons is a great incentive for idealistic student designers, and an opportunity to research the environmental human and political stories that go hand in hand with desperate people seeking refuge. The following sites are a good starting point for emergency and homeless shelter ideas, but there are many more online resources to inspire your students. https://movingcities.org/bertdemuynck/on-china/obra-at-work-in-china/ https://www.houminn.com/drift-house/drift-house/ https://www.openarchitecturenetwork.org/node/456

This would be a fantastic design challenge for students of any age level. I have noticed that children of all ages are interested in helping homeless people. This lesson would also be usable across the country since sheltering homeless people is a nationwide concern. These are also great websites. Thanks for sharing this great idea!
