I will be teaching preschool art this next year. I as a little intimidated by this since I know they don't even know their colors let alone how to hold a pencil and write their names. I then got a brain storm! Since they can't hold or cut with scissors, open a tight glue stick, peel the paper off from around a crayon, I thought I would start with the concept of looking at every day man-made object and their design. Even little kids use telephones, TV remotes, tie shoe laces, lift gallon milk jugs, open doors, zip zippers and so on. How easy is it for them to do or use these things? How are these things designed to be used by small children or ...AREN'T they? What could the designers do to make them better for little hands. Brainstorming with the kids will allow them to feel connected to their environment and maybe how to improve it. I know that this project could go on for hours and I may just start each class out this way...one "made for a larger person" object at a time!

Beth- I think this is an amazing idea. I am not sure if you have ever heard of Southern Living before but they actually sell a set of silverware that were designed with ridges in different spots so that they fit perfectly in a man's hand, a women's hand, and a child's hand. It would be a cool object to show the kids. Good Luck!

Another good comparision is how young children have some of the same challenges that older people have - lack of muscle to open and manuever objects, reading labels (small children cant read and older people have loss of eye sight), etc. It makes me think of the oxo products. Just think you could have a whole brand of products for the wee ones.
