I am currently an art teacher grades Preschool through 5th. I know there is lots of conversation and research about grades given in art class at those grades. I am required by my school district to give some type of grade for the report card but I grade on the following,... conduct during my class, use of materials, following procedures, neatness and effort. I DO NOT feel that a student should be graded on his/her art ability in the lover grades. When art is an elective, yes...grades on ability are important but when the kids are in the exploring state when they are young, grades may hinder future exploration in art. What are your thoughts?

Beth, I wholeheartedly agree with you. Art is supposed to be a way for students to express themselves and it is supposed to be completely subjective. Now I would understand grading a kid's artwork once they get to the high school level where their work is more structured and thematic -- but in K-5 these children, I believe should be using art to learn that it is possible to express themselves in ways other than the traditional methods. I think that by assigning a grade a to child's artwork is like giving them a grade for how they feel or what they are trying to convey. That in and of itself I think is completely unfair. Rudy

Beth and Rudy, I do agree that Art at any level should be subjective and not measured for the overall quality of the product and it should be used for learning purposes. However, in my experience of teaching, children have received Satisfactory grades across the board or unsatisfactory grades for behavior. This type of measuring is not measuring the learning process that is taking place, it appears to measure a child's behavior. As Beth said in her original post, she has certain expectations for her students, if these expectations were put in the form of a point system and a rubric was formulated grades could be given for the learning process. This would also eliminate subjective grades based solely on whether the child behaved well. It could also support the Art Teacher's grading practices if a parent has questions. Sandi

I agree with all of you. I too have found that the Art Grade was based on behavior and not Art ability however, this was never explained to parents. If parents knew that their child's grade had nothing to do with ability and everything to do with behavior perhaps they wouldn't be so hard on the Art teacher. Like Sandi said a rubric would help. I do agree with both Beth and Rudy in that Art in the lower grades is exposure and an outlet for their creativity. It is a learning process like all things on this level. It is a shame that our government doesn't get that! Good Luck!
