Trooper Sean McCarthy graced us with a visit to present the new State Police Headquarter's architectural designs during art class with George Latos' 5th grade ESL class. Trooper McCarthy spoke to the class about the different needs and challenges of building a new State Police Headquarters. The present building is over 200 years old and offices and labs are spread through out the state. This state of the art building which has yet to be built but the designs are ready to roll. The unique aspect of this building will finalize centralize all the different offices and labs. We discussed how there was a need and a problem and how different groups had to come together and find consensus. Finally, different nationally known design frims have solved these problems utilizing good design. Students then went through the process cooperative work deciding on a builiding of their choice and have been working the past couple of weeks designing floor builidings of their groups' choice. Trooper McCarthy took his time answering questions and inspiring the students to think "outside the box". We are really grateful that he came in. Trooper McCarthy showed how design effects even police work!!

Wow I think that this is such a good experience for learners! Additionally, who would have ever thought that design and police work would go together?

It is a really great experience. Students constantly go thru school thinking. "How am I ever going to use this in real life?" It's great to know that we can show them that Design exists everywhere, and can be utilized everywhere.

Awesome opportunity. It seems to hit home any time students can make that connection between real life and design. It is also so great to tie the design process together with someone who represents such an important part of our community.

What a terrific idea. I never would have imaged that a state trooper would be interested in talking to an art class!

This is exactly what we need more of - the merging of students, design and real-world situations with fine leaders helping out. Good job.

Our West Philadelphia community is in serious need of such heroes that will start an awareness among our youth to actively participate in the beautification of their community and act responsibly. Great ideas. Bravo.
