I am working up some ideas on bicycle design to do with my students. Bicycle design has evolved over the years to some amazing current designs that include carbon fiber bikes to unique folding bikes. The "Design for the other 90%" featured a bicycle extension system to help people carry goods on their bikes. I am wondering if anyone has come up with ideas along this line?

I recently read an article about a small town contractor that transported all of his materials on a trailer made for his bike. Within a week, I saw a bike "trailer" loaded and departing a Menard store in St. Paul.

I like it. I used to use a trailer for my kids...a Burley. Talk about getting your exersize! You could also haul some groceries but never thought about building supplies. In developing countries bikes are routinely used for everything. Maybe I should have them design a "camper" for a bike.

There was a great program on public TV in mid Feb. that showed people designing and testing all kinds of wonderful stuff. I can't find the name of it and was wondering if anyone happened to see it. It includes some home videos as well. I was reminded of it due to the discussion of the bike cart. There was an artist who hauled all his materials by bike cart as well. I would appreciate any help I could get in track down this show. thanks

I tried to see if I could find the show on the PBS website because it sounded very interesting. I couldn't find it, but I came across another interesting show called "Design Squad" that looked really cool. They go through the entire process of a design challenge each show. It seemed like a cool design resource.

For a look at creative bike design check out the first episode of "Make:television", (https://makezine.tv/episodes/). The profile of the first segment is on a performance art group, Cyclecide, that creates amusement park rides and an assortment of peddle-powered contraptions.

At the Art SHanty event this past January they had a bike race and one guy rode a bike that he designed to look like an elephant running. I think he also wrote different anti-republican statements or something of the sort. From my understanding he rode the bike all around the Republican National Convention site as well as through out the city. So, his bike was designed as a political statement. It was fabuous and, amazingly, manuevered quite well during the race. I was impressed!
