I attended the Design Institute in Minneapolis, MN, and happened to catch the CBS Sunday Morning show today (8/03/08). In it was a segment that I would highly recommend to the other participants, as it was on success - and failure. It was called "If At First You Don't Succeed...What Are The Hallmarks Of Failure, And Why Should We Ignore Them?" I believe Mark Strassmann was the reporter, and the overall message was "Don't Give Up! Try, Try Again!" They included Henry Petroski, of Duke University, and author J. K. Rowling, among others. I think this would be a great thing to show students as they embark on their design ideas. Don't know if this will work, but try this link: https://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/08/03/sunday/main4317448.shtml Otherwise, google CBS News>Sunday Morning, and you'll see it on that page. Although I didn't see that segment I'd like to say that the art and design segments on CBS News Sunday Morning and 60 Minutes are excellent. CBS will sell copies for teachers interested in using them in the classroom. They did two excellent segments on architect Frank Gehry that are great for use in design lessons at the middle and high school levels. Many videos available for middle school are not very well done but these short interviews really keep the kids interested. You can search their website or call to purchase. The last Frank Gehry segment was on Jan. 23, 2002 on 60 Minutes. He discusses his design process and how he gets his ideas. They also show lots of his work.
