Where do the elements and principles come from?

Does anyone know the origin of the elements and principles of design? It's easy to find a list of them. It's not so easy to find out about the history of them. When asked, many people will site "the Bauhaus" as their origin. But does that mean Gropius? How about Itten? Exactly who was it? Why did they do it? People talk about the elements and principles as if they were universal absolutes, yet there are slight variations from list to list. My real concern is this: how can these ideas be so important without anyone really knowing where they began or how they were introduced into the analysis and creation of art? Maybe I'm the only one who doesn't know. If so, help me out. If you can't say for sure, try looking it up. You may find quite little.
