Homelessness is surging across America as the recession bites. In Florida, the Pinella's Hope Camp is an attempt by the Catholic Charities at the St. Petersburg diocese to do something practical about the problem. The 250 person camp provides basic amenities including access to computers to assist with job searches. The idea in part is provide an alternative to illegal improvised tent cities that have been closed by police and the design idea is not so much about the shelters in this instance, but the program as a whole that brings together available land, church facilities, some key amenities, donated food and community and government support. I teach science and would love to see how my students would apply this to science. Science and design seem to go hand in hand. They both seek to provide answers and solutions to problems. This would be a great service learning project. My students encounter homelessness on a daily basis, as they walk or ride to school. This could also invest youths in their communities.

This is a great way to incorporate design in a meangiful way. For example, physical science students could take into consideration the best material and color for the tents based on their conductivity and heat absorption. This would be something important to consider especially during summer months.
