Another teacher and I are working on a grant to get compost bins for our school and willing participants in our city. I would like to get some ideas for compost bin design as well as some ideas for how we could incorporate visual arts/graphic arts into the design of the bin. Any thoughts?

Elizabeth, We are in the process of designing our recycling program at our HS and have put out in contest form, the picture that will adorn the side of our bins. Perhaps you could do the same for your composting set up. Get stickers with the winning design on them to put on the compost apparatus and maybe some smaller ones that will encourage more composting at home. I was just at NSTA (Nat'l Science Teachers Assoc. annual meeting) here in Boston and went to a session where the speaker does the recycling and composting for all the schools across the county. She may be able to give some more advise. Her name was Kerry Christian and she is with the Wake County Solid Waste Management Division (

I, too, was at NSTA and saw you across the vender hall, but couldn't get to you to chat. The conference was great! We presented our engineering curriculum we are writing at Jamerson on Saturday. Anyway, back to your posting. I just went online to try to find out more information about the information you heard about. Here is the website about the program you heard about: https://www.jgpress.com/archives/_free/000587.html This might be a great lesson to incorporate for Earth Day celebration. Thanks, William, for sharing this information. My brain is now stirring with ways to incorporate design and recycling.

The idea of a school working on compost bins designs is a project that an entire school community can partake in. It works better, however, with small school environments. Below I offer some ideas/suggestions that may be modified to your advantage, as I am unsure of whether there are some some limitations posed by the grant. These ideas come the experience of a teacher that deals with youth in an urban setting. It is important that students are heavily involved as it will provide them with a sense of belonging to a real school community, especially with projects like the one described. 1) Students can participate in offering their ideas by submitting in their own designs---these most likely will be students that are artists and/or aspiring architects. 2) Teachers can get together with students, the designs can be circulated, and students should vote on the designs they like best. 3)Incorporating awareness on issues like recycling, etc---as described above. Having experts come in to talk about these issues in the classrooms. 4) Through the continuation of an electoral process, students vote once again for the best design of a compost bin. Hope this helps..

Great! Thanks for all of the replies and ideas! I am excited to get working on this project. It's fun to have a big ooh-aah thing to look forward to happening in the fall when the new school year starts and this is going to be my big ooh-aah. Keep the ideas coming. I hit the orange flag next to one of the comments and it was sent to be investigated-sorry about that! I am guilty of random clicking on icons sometimes.

My block captain here in Philadelphia wants me to help him instruct my neighbors on the benefits of composting in our tiny little, city-sized back yards. What a great idea! Now, I have another thought for designing a program with my students to act as their own "block captains" to design an education program for their neighbors on the block.

Federer was expected to face
Mbt Shoes
his first serious test of the tournament against the man
Mbt Fanaka Gtx
who beat him at the French Open, and it was Soderling who had the early chances.Three break points came
New Mbt M Walk Shoes
and went in game two and another
Latest Ugg Boots
in game six, each time Federer finding a first serve when it mattered, and while both players were
Ugg Boots Clearance
hitting well from the baseline it was the Swiss who was
Ugg Bailey Button
making the winners. That proved decisive in game seven when the 16-time Grand Slam champion earned his first break point and
Classic Argyle Knit Boots
duly converted with an absolutely magical forehand drop shot.
With his serve working at
Classic Cardy Boots
fluent best, Federer quickly closed out the set and moved clear early in the second when Soderling wearing
Vibram Five Fingers
cracked under the pressure
Vibram Kso
and double-faulted at break point in game three. It was to the Swede's credit that he recovered the deficit immediately with
Vibram Classic
backhand arrowed down the line, but
Vibram Five Fingers Sprint
successive break followed when he let a 40-0 lead slip as Federer fired a forehand past him at the net.
