Hello everyone, I just got information about the National Art Educator convention in NYC. It is March 14-18. I was reading through the list on speakers and workshops. I am excited about going to hear William Wegman, he is an photographer. I thought I would let you guys know about upcoming events by me, just in case. The website is naea-reston.org.

The NAEA Convention is a a great experience for Art Educators. I attended the conference in Boston- 2005. Last year I was a workshop presenter at the Chicago Convention. There are so many interesting people, vendors, museum educators and many givaway items to take back to your classroom. It is an invaluable five day extravaganza! I did notice that Barbara Nikoomanesh, a Cooper-Hewitt Educator who participated in the Fulton Street workshop last summer, will be presenting at this years convention. Congratulations Barbara!

Thanks Deborah. I will be presenting Environmental Design in the Art Classroom, which is the program Lee Sappingfield and I team teach. We do try to expose students to as many different design fields as we can. The presentation is Tuesday, March 14, at 2:00, in concorse B. I am anxious to see the friends we met this summer at the Cooper-Hewitt's SDI and City in Neighborhoods. Would everyone planning on attending or presenting post, so we know who to look for? I also am excited to return to the Cooper-Hewitt for the Built Environment Issues Group meeting on Friday, March 16.

I am so sorry I was unable to go to the convention this year - and - right in my own "backyard". I wish I could have seen Barbara present, congratulation!

Sorry Barbara I was unable to see you on Wednesday. I had parent/teacher conferences at my school that day. I went on Thursday and Sunday. The Guerrilla Girls lecture was really interesting.

Cassandra, How was William Wegman's presentation? I hope it was fascinating. He has a show here in LA that just opened yesterday that I hope to get a chance to see. Did he talk about his painting? Does he have a preference between the two mediums? I guess I just need to do some more research...

Donna, I wonder if that is the same show that was just at the Brooklyn Museum? My students enjoyed seeing his work when I took them last year. They loved his images.

Donna, William Wegman was very interesting and funny. He talked about his photography and paintings. I don't think he has a direct favorite to either medium, but he said that he started as a painter and found photography later. When he was talking about his work I could tell that he has two different ways of thinking between the two. He was a great speaker. He has some really funny videos of his dogs also. He is a great art reference.

Thanks Cassandra. Now I REALLY have to see his show in LA, even though he won't actually be there. I'm a huge dog lover so his photographic work has always impressed me. His paintings though - they're what I'm itching to see... Monique - the gallery here in LA showing his work says that the postcard paintings are from his "critically acclaimed Brooklyn Museum retrospective in 2006", so yeah - I'd be seeing the same stuff you did last year with your students! Fun coincidence, eh?

Deborah, Barbara and anyone else who has presented at NAEA - I know that the deadline for presenting at next years convention is coming up. Was it a difficult process to become a presenter? If you are a presenter, is there any help in financing getting to the convention from NAEA?

Monique, Once you fill out the presenter application, you just have to wait until you hear whether or not they accept your proposal. Unfortunately, you probably won't hear back until at least November. That means you should plan on attending, whether or not you are going to be presenting, so you can get your hotel reservation and air fair. The hotels fill up quickly and the air fair goes up as you get closer to the date. Try to be as informative and concise as you can in your description of the presentation. I don't believe NAEA would help with financing, although your school district might if you let them know you put a proposal in to present at a National convention. Most school districts like the fact that one of their teachers is representing them on this level. Good Luck.

Next year the conference will be in New Orleans. It would be nice if we could find out about what they need there in the way of art materials that we could all send to help the teachers out. Aparently things are still pretty bad there.

Kathy, I love the idea of sending materials. I always have extra stuff and would be thrilled to promote this in my school and having students involved. Do you anyone we could get in touch with? I suppose I could call NAEA and ask them. Please let's keep in touch about this.

There were 40 teachers from New Orleans that just participated in City of Neighborhoods in New York. The New Orleans teachers will be using this website soon, so you would be able to communicate with them directly.
